It’s always coffee time

It's always coffee time

I cannot imagine a city or town without a decent coffee house.

In Vaasa, they’re few and way too small but good. PARIS is one, with its windows overlooking the Market Square.

Brave enough to die for nothing. Raja 1918 / Border 1918 (2007)

Brave enough to die for nothing. Raja 1918 / Border 1918 (2007)

Raja 1918 is a war genre movie, made by Finland and Russia jointly and advertised mainly (if not only) in those two countries, which is a pity – to my mind, it’s good enough to show to the world. I’d rank it somewhat higher than Flags of Our Fathers & many others. Honest.

Long time no see

Long time no see

But I’m back folks. While I was running my errands Betty Boop came to town! 🙂

Here’s some evidence:

Chicken with herbs and garlic in white wine

Chicken with herbs and garlic in white wine

So simple, so good that cooking it is like dancing… say, to Gloria Estefan’s biisit* 🙂

I did not use any books for making this, so the exact proportion of components is a matter of experience.

You will need:

one middle-sized chicken or 3-4 chicken legs

For stuffing and spreading on top:

20 or […]

People I like

People I like

No, I do not take pictures of food only 😀

Last Sunday in a town approx. 250 km away from Vaasa I photographed a mother & a son. I love this pic and they (!) do, too.

This Friday’s choices

This Friday's choices

I think I’d better write now… before I finish off the bottle 😀

What I drank:

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine

Very dry, strong flavor from Nantes. Tastes a bit grapefruity and tongue biting at first, however as you drink more of it you feel how complete this wine is, how perfect […]

Well done Hesari! :-D

Well done Hesari! :-D

This might as well be a coinсidence, but it looks so nice I couldn’t help it 😀

The article in Helsingin Sanomat on approval of Lex Nokia (if you want to ask the answer is yes she did) containing, among all, the following statement:

Kukkamyrsky-nimellä Facebookissa esiintyvä aktivistiryhmä lähetti Haloselle perjantaiaamuna noin 300 euron […]

One gun, many kills

One gun, many kills

If you want to get depressed, go read the news.

One more Pubertät shot people in a school, this time in Germany. No wonder they will blame it all on counterstrike, horror movies, and the evil Internet 😀 Those too have no attorney.

Therapists, school teachers, and policement might get their share of candy, […]

Been there, done that

Been there, done that

Last weekend in Helsinki. We booked a table in a restaurant serving delicious “traditional” Lapland foods.

Assorted fish & reindeer meat

The starters. I guess a Laplandese would be astonished by seeing all this food and getting to know that he’s supposed to eat it daily 😀

Smoked […]

You still do not have to wait until 65 to retire in Finland

Ta-daaam. I thereby declare 11.3.2009 as Jutta Urpilainen‘s Day 😀

She’s just a year my senior and has been elected by the people of Vaasa. Originally from Kokkola.

Sunny side up!

Sunny side up!

Iltalehti reported finding Salmonella typhimurium in a batch of home-produced fresh eggs.

Later they wrote that it was a crying wolf alert, nothing much to worry about. Eggs just have to be properly cooked.

So we did 😉

Fried eggs

Jiihaa. Properly cooked eggs.

Vaasa Water Tower (Raastuvankatu 32)

Here it is, view at the top from down:

The water tower was built back in 1915 to a project by architect brothers Jussi and Toivo Paatela in jugend style of red bricks. It’s 49 m high, impressive, and one of Vaasa’s landmarks. The volume of […]

Change is in the air…

Change is in the air...

Finalnd is waiting for the result of Lex Nokia final vote in the Parliament. Voting is today at 15.00 local time.

Pro argument: the new law will protect commercial secrets and prevent misuse of corporate networks, which have become a great deal of a problem now. Contra argument: the possibility of employees to contact […]

Essi Pöysti is Miss Finland 2009

Essi Pöysti is Miss Finland 2009

She seems to be the right choice. Essi’s blond & pretty, not too young (21 yo), not too tall (174 cm), not strikingly thin (56 kg) and with fair complexion. Her mother comes from Lapua and nowadays the family lives in Jyväskylä. Her sibling Eetu plays ice hockey, her boyfriend is modest enough to […]

Paintings in a billiard bar

Desperate housewives watching their husbands lose money 😀

Just kidding. I don’t know what that means. But the bartender of this bar makes good daiquiris.

No going to Utsjoki

No going to Utsjoki

There’s enough snow right here & now 🙂

©Julkka

To go to Utsjoki actually means to go to Norway. Or, simply, very far and probably out of Finland 🙂
